Chennai-based Optima Advertising has appointed Abraham G Karimpanal as VP Creative, effective immediately. A seasoned creative professional, Karimpanal brings with him over 16 years of experience in a variety of sectors like FMCG, durables, software and jewellery. In his last role, Karimpanal was Associate Vice President and Senior Creative Director at JWT Chennai. He had started his career with HTA (later JWT) then moved to O&M, Lowe, Orchard, and had a second stint with JWT. He has worked on many of India’s well-known brands, including Tanishq, Fast Track, Infosys, Wipro Net Kracker and Oberoi Hotels in Lowe, Fairver Fairness Cream, Everglo Dishwash bar, Ruchi Pickles (all from CavinKare), Dalmia Cements, Magicwoods and Lotte Confectionery at Orchard, and TI Cycles, Murugappa Group, Pondicherry Tourism, GRT Hotels, etc., at JWT.

The situation is not a very happy one for publications in Jammu & Kashmir as per the IRS Q2 2010 results. All the top four dailies have seen de-growth in this quarter. Meanwhile, magazines have witnessed an unusual situation where the top three magazines have remained stagnant. Surprisingly, there is no mention of monitoring of Urdu dailies in J&K in the IRS survey.

Punjab Kesari has topped the list of dailies in the Himachal Pradesh market, recording a 9.73 per cent growth in average issue readership (AIR) in IRS Q2 2010. The daily was followed by Amar Ujala and Divya Himachal. Six of the top nine dailies in Himachal Pradesh have recorded a negative growth.

There are no surprises in the Kerala market as per the IRS Q2 2010 results as far as newspapers are concerned. While maintaining its leadership, Malayala Manorama has further strengthened its foothold in the market by adding 253,000 readers in Q2. Deshabhimani is the only other Malayalam daily to have shown strong growth in Kerala. Apart from these two, nearly all dailies have witnessed slump in readership.

With substantial increase in readership, market leader in Andhra Pradesh, Eenadu, has further widened the gap with No. 2 player Sakshi, according to IRS Q2 2010 results. While elsewhere magazines have taken a beating, in Andhra Pradesh magazines have displayed a commendable show. Barring Swati, all other magazines have shown growth.

The Kolkata market has turned out to be a Utopia for newspapers, with all five top five players recording growth in average issue readership (AIR). Carrying the age old tradition, Anand Bazar Patrika has yet again topped the charts with an AIR of 2,807,000 as per IRS Q2 2010 results. Bartaman, its nearest competitor, could only garner an AIR of 1,002,000.

The Bangalore market has seen good numbers, giving some much needed hope to the print industry. What is interesting to note is that as per the IRS Q2 2010 results, magazines have seen tremendous growth in the Bangalore market. The Week has seen the highest growth among magazines, while among dailies, Prajavani has seen the most growth in average issue readership (AIR).

There is some cheer for Daily Thanthi and Dinakaran in the Chennai market as per the IRS Q2 2010 results. The two leading Tamil dailies have added 57,000 (Daily Thanthi) and 58,000 (Dinakaran) readers in this quarter. However, Dinamalar, another leading Tamil daily in the market, has seen a 2.17 per cent decline in its average issue readership (AIR).

The Madhya Pradesh market has thrown up mixed results as per the IRS Q2 2010 numbers. The state has once again witnessed a huge difference in AIR (Average Issue Readership) between the top two players. The decline story of magazines has continued in Madhya Pradesh as well, with four of the top five magazines seeing negative growth in AIR.

Both newspapers and magazines have put up a decent performance in the Uttar Pradesh market in IRS Q2 2010. Three of the top five newspapers and two of the top three magazines have seen growth in average issue readership (AIR) in this quarter. Dainik Jagran has maintained its top position among the dailies, while Saras Salil is ranked first among the magazines.
