Chief Electoral Officer Praveen Kumar has said that launching a poll campaign in the social media will require an okay from the appointed panel of the Election Commission of India.
The directive follows the Election Commission seeking clarification from the AIADMK on its proposed social media campaign. Kumar said that the political party had said that it would provide CDs of its propaganda material to the poll body. The material will be seen by a panel constituted for the purpose of monitoring such campaigns.
Guidelines for election campaigning on social media require:
• Information to be given by candidates about their social media accounts
• Pre-certification of political advertisements
• Expenditure on campaigning through the internet, including social media websites
• Application of Model Code of Conduct to content on the internet, including social media
