Through a series of cease-and-desist notices, the Bar Council of India (BCI) has reportedly come down heavily on online lawyer advertisements promoting legal services.

The move follows a recent judgement by the Madras High Court that censured lawyers who sought businesses online through legal ads, which flout BCI regulations.

The ruling has prompted the BCI to mandate that the State Bar Councils bring such errant lawyers to task. The council has also laid out measures to action these regulations. These include disciplinary action against lawyers issuing ads; complaints against online platforms hosting these ads, and subsequently removing the ads.

Advocates promoting services through online ads will be given a deadline to remove all content violating Rule 36 of the BCI rules.

A report says that the deadline for submitting compliance reports from both the State Bar Councils and the online platforms is August 10, 2024.
