Relief for Ramdev as SC closes contempt proceedings in Patanjali misleading ads case
The SC said that while their apology was accepted, Ramdev and Balakrishna should refrain from violating court orders like they have done before
The Supreme Court reportedly closed contempt proceedings against Patanjali’s Baba Ramdev and aide Balakrishna today in the misleading ads case, but not without warning against violating court orders.
Patanjali's legal representative advocate Gautam Talukdar reportedly said that the proceedings were closed based on the undertakings given by Ramdev, Balkrishna and Patanjali Ayurveda.
The bench comprising Justice Hima Kohli and Justice Sandeep Mehta told Ramdev and Balakrishna that their apology had been accepted, but issued a warning that they would not do anything in violation of the court orders as they had done so before.
“We have come down heavily and we warn that this should not be done in the future,” the order said.
“The affidavits tendered before this court should be done with full truth. We close the contempt proceedings initiated against the party with the warning of adhering to the orders passed by this court in this case. The notice issued to present contemnor also stands discharge and closed," SC reportedly said.
The SC censured Ramdev and Balakrishna for Patanjali’s misleading ads for Coronil, a drug that the company claimed was the “first evidence-based medicine for COVID-19” and that it had certification from WHO. The claims were both challenged by the Indian Medical Association.
Ramdev was also heard in a video saying that allopathy was a “stupid and bankrupt science” post which IMA demanded an apology.
