Justice A.K. Sikri appointed Chairperson of News Broadcasting Standards Authority

Former Supreme Court judge, Justice A. K. Sikri has been appointed as the Chairperson of the News Broadcasting Standards Authority (NBSA), according to news reports. He is expected to assume office on May 26 and will succeed Justice R.V. Raveendran whose term will come to an end on May 25.
According to reports, in his statement, NBA President Rajat Sharma expressed that that Justice Sikri's vast experience in judiciary and an impeccable record as a judge would definitely strengthen self-regulation and NBSA. Saying, "It is an independent body, which is free from any interference from the NBA."
During his tenure as Supreme Court judge, Justice Sikri has pronounced several verdicts in the area of human rights, including on transgenders; giving the legal status of third gender, euthanasia (passive euthanasia for patients in permanent vegetative state), and on other crucial verdicts such as, child trafficking, child labour, juvenile delinquents, compensation for people with disability and others.
