Our new version of Makemytrip and Goibibo Apps are giving cutting edge experience in the market, said Deep Kalra, Founder and Group CEO, MakeMyTrip.com. Kalra spoke at a recently- concluded event in New Delhi, where Shaili Chopra, Founder, SheThePeople. TV moderated the session on how technology has changed the travel industry widely over the last two years.

The Nasdaq listed company, saw net revenues from the hotel business surge by almost 140% to $81.2 million in the first quarter of FY 2017-18.

Highlighting the importance of technology in travel, Deep said “Online travel like just any other vertical is getting completely turned on its head with the advancement in technology. It is totally different now than what it was used to be earlier, when I started the company 17 and a half years back. The reality is, we were in the dark ages, but today, the breakthrough in technology and high-speed Internet has changed the game and mobile is one of the big winner”.

Today, more than 70% of our transactions come through mobile; we have reached to a level where every development, every product and every release has already taken up a base level of personalization.

According to Kalra, anyone who uses their app will not find anything irrelevant. For brands, it is important to get smarter and adapt, as consumers’ expectations rises. “It is crucial for brands to understand, how much time they spend with their consumers and how deep they are going with their consumers to get real questions”. 20% of our post sales are on Goibibo, which are being serviced by GRIO (Goibibo Assistant) and it will reach to 80% in a span of 12-18 months.

Commenting on how travel is breaking benchmarks and shaping the future, he said, “The single biggest reason people are travelling more today not only in India, but all over the world is because of social media, especially over the last two years. Gone are the days where you would be reading travel magazines. Today, posting on FB, Insta, Twitter becomes so fascinating that people want to explore the same whether they are in Tier I or Tier II”.

Digital Technology has changed the way we connect, creating a relationship of comfort with the customers,” he concluded.
