PM Modi's #SelfieWithDaughter initiative takes the internet by storm
By Monday afternoon, #SelfieWithDaughter had received around 1.5 lakh tweets. It was also one of the top trending topics on Facebook. The initiative sparked controversy on Twitter after activist accused Modi of stalking daughters
On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a nationwide digital campaign titled ‘SelfieWithDaughter’ urging fathers and daughters to take selfies and upload them on Twitter to promote the ‘Beti Bachaho Beti Padhao’ campaign. He announced that the selfie with an interesting caption would be re-tweeted from his official Twitter account. Internet got immediately flooded with tweets from fathers who are proud to have beautiful daughters.
The initiative got applauded by Twitterati as a great move to spread awareness and save the girl child. The Prime Minister made this request, during the radio show ‘Mann Ki Baat’ on Sunday. According to reports, #SelfieWithDaughter is the brainchild of a Sarpanch in Haryana’s Biwipur village who started this contest, requesting fathers to click selfies with their daughters and to send him the pictures via WhatsApp to spread awareness on the dipping ratio of girls to boys. With Modi promoting this initiative, #SelfieWithDaughter has taken the entire nation by storm. By Monday afternoon, the hashtag #SelfieWithDaughter has garnered around 1.6 lakh tweets on Twitter. It also remained one of the top trending topics on Facebook.
In January, this year, PM Modi had launched the ‘Beti Bachao and Beti Padhao’ campaign, to end discrimination against girl child. In a bid to encourage birth and education of girls and tackle the abysmally low child sex ratio of 918 girls for 1000 boys, this initiative was kick-started.

This thing took a controversial twist, after Kavita Krishnan who is the Secretary of the All India Progressive Women’s Association and a Polit Bureau member CPI (ML) tweeted saying ‘Be careful before sharing #SelfieWithDaughter with the PM, because he has a record of stalking daughters’. Following which, she was thrashed on the social media by Modi followers. Krishnan’s supporters however, stood by her and showed their displeasure in the distasteful language which has been used to insult her.
Here is the snapshot of the conversation:
Careful before sharing #SelfieWithDaughter with #LameDuckPM. He has a record of stalking daughters.

Strange isn't it how #Vyapam and #Asaram witnesses both conveniently have a habit of serial suspicious deaths? @ChouhanShivraj @PMOIndia
— Kavita Krishnan (@kavita_krishnan) June 29, 2015
You know this #SelfieWithDaughter was a showoff when you go through the type of language Modi Bhakts unleashed on @kavita_krishnan :)

A man who could not give respect to someone's daughter, vociferously launches #SelfieWithDaughter campaign. Irony! @kavita_krishnan
