Andy Rubin is out as the leader of Google's Android efforts. Rubin in handing the reins to Sundar Pichai, a nine-year Google veteran who is the Senior Vice President for Chrome and Apps.

This move may be an indication that Android and Chrome will grow closer together as they compete with Apple’s iOS and Mac OS.

A company release states: “Sundar has a talent for creating products that are technically excellent yet easy to use, and he loves a big bet. Take Chrome, for example. In 2008, people asked whether the world really needed another browser. Today, Chrome has hundreds of millions of happy users and is growing fast thanks to its speed, simplicity and security.”

Rubin came to Google in August 2005, when the company acquired his mobile software startup, Android, Inc.
