While the ‘Camp Rock’ soundtrack embodies everything unique and inspiring, the re-created tracks bring in local elements to give the music enthusiast an opportunity to experience the songs with a complete Indian flavour.
Rajat Kakar, Managing Director, Universal Music India Pvt Ltd, said, “We are truly excited to partner with The Walt Disney Company in India. Localisation plays a pivotal role in reaching music to a larger audience, especially in a key market like India where consumers want to experience global properties with a local flavour. With the ‘Camp Rock’ initiative, we believe, we have a sure winner on our hands.”
Antoine Villeneuve, Senior Vice President and Managing Director, Walt Disney Television International (India), said, “One of the key components of Disney Channel is localising global content. We are optimistic that ‘Camp Rock’ will have as long a life as ‘High School Musical’ around the world – with local elements like these built to support its success.”
While Disney’s ‘Camp Rock’ will debut in India in December this year, ratings of its premiere in the US were stellar. This Disney TV movie kicked off an unprecedented weekend premiere event, becoming cable’s most-watched entertainment telecast of 2007-08, and ranked No. 1 overall among tweens 9-14. Peaking with nearly 10 million viewers in its final half-hour, Disney’s ‘Camp Rock’ gained two million, start-to-finish. Since premiering in the US and Canada on June 20, 2008, ‘Camp Rock’ has reached over 48.3 million unduplicated viewers worldwide.
Directed by John Stewart, the ‘Camp Rock’ album includes three re-created songs in Hindi with Indian instruments while nine others are re-recorded in Hindi. The title track – ‘We Rock’ – sung by Sunidhi Chauhan and music band Aasma mirrors the inspirational theme of the movie. The second re-created version, ‘Hasta La Vista’ sung by Jimmi Felix and Vasudha is a complete Bollywood style track with bhangra beats, hip hop and electric guitar. This song celebrates the true essence of team spirit and adds an extra zing to the album. The duet sung by Sunidhi Chauhan and Sangeeta Haldipur – ‘Khush Hoon Main’ (Original title: ‘This is me’) captures the path of self discovery and enthuses self belief. The themes of ‘Camp Rock’ – believe in yourself, express yourself and stay true to yourself – is carried through the lyrics especially written for the album. Available at all modern retail and music outlets across key metros, the album is priced at Rs 195.
