In the countdown to this Mother’s Day (May 14), the e4m ‘Mom Boss’ series celebrates beautiful and inspiring mothers of our industry.

Along with two decades of brand-building and marketing experience, Vanda Ferrao is also a mom to a nine-year-old girl and a seven-year-old boy. The Chief Marketing Officer of WoW Skin Science says it is important for a mother to make time for herself and seek help when needed.

In order to juggle the demanding roles of being a mother and a working woman, it is important to seek help when needed apart from having a fit mind and body, says Ferrao. “I believe the biggest challenge is our expectation of wanting it all and wanting it fast. And in the process, we run the risk of burning out.

“We need to acknowledge that we are juggling demanding roles and need to pace them well, and most importantly - ask for help when needed. While managing both these roles what we ignore is making time for ourselves. If we do not rejuvenate our mind, body and spirit, we are doing a suboptimal job in both roles, which then makes us want to opt-out,” Ferrao said.

Motherhood, this mom boss says, has made her more grounded and taught her to appreciate time and patience.

“While my idea of success has not changed, the internalisation of giving your best every day and appreciating the present has made the journey to success more meaningful,” Ferrao said.

As advice for career-oriented moms, Ferrao said it was important to seek advice and plan well, ask for help and take care of yourself.

“Your career is a long haul and you need to prepare yourself accordingly so that you don’t burn out. It’s going to be tough sometimes and asking for help is not a bad thing. You will be surprised at how many people are genuinely willing to help. It starts at home so make your spouse champion your goals.

“Take care of yourself. A fit mind and body can do wonders in managing your career and your family. Pick up a sport to stay fit and a hobby to unwind. Surround yourself with friends and family who are your cheerleaders and nudge you on,” Ferrao remarked.
