Well-known journalist and analyst, Praful Bidwai, passed away last night. Bidwai, 65, was in Amsterdam, where he was attending a conference. Though certain media outlets reported his death was from cardiac arrest, one of his close friends tweeted that he died after choking on his food.
Bidwai’s was a constant voice for nearly 4 decades and his syndicated columns on politics, foreign policy and environment provided India and the world a critical perspective on important developments.
His columns have been featured in a diverse range of publications like Hindustan Times, Frontline, Rediff.com, The Guardian (London), The Nation (New York), Le Monde Diplomatique (Paris), and Il Manifesto (Rome). He was also Senior Editor at The Times of India.
A prominent and respected peace activist, he helped found the Movement in India for Nuclear Disarmament (MIND). He was a member of the International Network of Engineers and Scientists against Proliferation and was one of the leaders of the Coalition for Nuclear Disarmament and Peace, India. In 2000, he was one of the recipients of the Sean McBride International Peace Prize by the International Peace Bureau.
