Veerendra Kumar, the Chairman and Managing Director of Mathrubhumi, passed away on Thursday night. He was 84.
Veerendra Kumar, also an independent Rajya Sabha MP, suffered a cardiac arrest, media reports said.
He is survived by wife Usha and four children, including M V Shreyams Kumar, the present Joint Managing Director of Mathrubhumi.
Veerendra Kumar was a follower of the path set by socialist leader Jayprakash Narayan and was among those who were imprisoned during the Emergency.
Veerendra Kumar also served stints as Union Minister of State for Finance and Labour.
He was known for championing causes for protecting the environment apart from being a prolific writer.
