I got to know Umesh Upadhyay, or Umesh Ji as he was fondly called, a little later in life—some ten years ago. These were some of the most tumultuous years in the Indian media and political landscape. Our youthful exuberance, which had been an asset until then, suddenly needed to be curtailed, requiring a finesse I wasn't too familiar with.

My initial interactions with Umesh Ji were all about getting to know each other. I recall hosting him and his wife for a meal at my residence once, where we began to form a bond that grew stronger over the years. Even after he moved away from Network18, he continued to stay in touch with me. We would often exchange notes on the evolving political scenarios in the country. I came to appreciate his quick wit and the captivating anecdotes he could share with such flair.

Over time, a very healthy and admirable relationship developed between us. His grasp of the Hindi language and his command over poetry always left me impressed. Umesh Ji had a unique way of bringing depth and humor to conversations, which I greatly enjoyed.

In his passing, I feel the loss of a true friend—one with whom I could have real, meaningful conversations. I will miss you, Umesh Ji.
