The former editor-in-charge of The Week, TR Gopalakrishnan passed away in the wee hours of Wednesday. He was 72.
Known popularly as TRG, he worked for the publication from 1983 to 2018 when he retired. In his 34 years at The Week, TRG was credited with steering the English news magazine to its top spot among publications.
The Delhi-born editor dabbled in engineering at IIT Kanpur, eventually switching to journalism in 1974.
His first assignment was as a reporter at Motherland run by the erstwhile Jan Sangh party.
After working for publications such as This Fortnight and Real India, he briefly covered Mumbai showbiz.
TGR hails from a family with journalistic ties. His father TV Rajagopalan was a journalist and his mother Vijayalakshmi was the librarian at United News of India (UNI) in Delhi.
His passing comes 72 days after the death of his wife Geetha Srinivasan who died in September 2023.
