After enthralling Indian audiences for 70 years, BBC Hindi will no longer be on air come April 1, 2011. BBC Hindi shortwave radio service was well in existence even before India had won its Independence. For many in rural India, the service was the only means of knowledge of the outside world.
According to Peter Horrocks, Director, BBC Global News, the move was taken in a bid to cut costs. Several other language stations across various countries are likely to be shut down over the next few years owing to the cut in grants.
