Media Industry grieves loss of KVL Narayan Rao, NDTV’s Group CEO
NDTV’s Group CEO and Executive Vice Chairperson KVL Narayan Rao passed away on November 20 after fighting cancer for last two years.
“Narayan was our friend for over 30 years and we loved him like a brother. We learnt so much from Narayan - and admired how he created a compassionate environment at NDTV and, in fact, everywhere he went, with everyone he met. Just as we loved him, there are hundreds of others like us for whom Narayan was very, very special. Seldom has a person been loved by so many and will be deeply missed by so many,” Dr Prannoy Roy and Radhika Roy wrote in a statement.
He was the President of the News Broadcasters Association (NBA), Board member of the Indian Broadcasting Foundation (IBF) and Vice President of the Commonwealth Broadcasting Association (CBA).
“Narayan Rao will always be missed in the NBA boardroom. He as a board member contributed immensely to help the broadcast industry. For me he was not only an esteemed colleague but also a great support. It is indeed a great loss to the broadcasting community,” Rajat Sharma, President, NBA and founder and chairman - India TV told exchange4media.
Rao, who has started his career as a journalist with The Indian Express, was invited to join the Board on NDTV in 1998. He had joined NDTV as General Manager in January 1995 and had an important role to play in expanding NDTV from a production house to a broadcaster. In fact, it was Rao who gave his voice to NDTV’s signature line “This is NDTV”.
“I vividly remember meeting him when I became the member of News Broadcasters association (NBA). He came across as an extremely amicable person who was easy to connect. He was a very forward looking person and someone with true leadership qualities,” Annuradha Prasad, who replaced KVL Narayan Rao as the honorary treasurer of NBA, told exchange4media adding that Rao’s untimely demise is a huge loss to the entire industry.
He was considered a soft spoken and a calm person. The news of his sudden demise left everyone in the industry pained. “Today the NBA and IBF families have lost a leading light, Shri Narayan Rao,” Smriti Irani, Minister of Information and Broadcasting tweeted.
Many veterans in the media industry paid condolences to the departing soul.

More than 21 years ago, I walked into Narayan's office, a 22 yr old kid looking for a first job. Many yrs later, he negotiated with the govt to get me footage for our series, Great Battles. Always classy, always kind. KVL Narayan Rao, rest peacefully.

Narayan Rao's legacy includes News Broadcasters' Association and News Broadcasters' Standards Authority - He was a founding director for both. This self regulatory mechanism has helped responsible journalism and kept the governments at bay.
Condolences friend.
