The Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, on Thursday said that Prasar Bharati's free DTH service was a step forward in the continuing process of emotional integration.

Speaking after the launch of the DTH service, Dr Singh said that while DTH has the capacity to reach out to every household, attention must be paid to the message.

"As a public broadcaster there must be focus on content - content that promotes liberalism, pluralism, secularism and unity in diversity."

He added that Prasar Bharati must define and develop the role of a national broadcaster.

Dr Singh also urged Doordarshan to think about setting up global news channels like BBC and CNN. "Do we have the aspirations to launch a news channel for the world market?"

Earlier, the Information and Broadcasting Minister, Mr Jaipal Reddy, called Prasar Bharati's DTH venture "a common man's DTH platform" and said that it could become the growth engine.
