The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) has granted its permission to Star Sports to broadcast in all regional languages, including Assamese, Bengali, Dogri, Gujarati, Kannada, Kashmiri, Konkani, Maithili, Malayalam, Manipuri, Marathi, Nepali, Sanskrit, Santhali, Sindhi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu, among other languages as permitted under the Constitution of India.

This apart, Star Sports has also got the licence for four new sports channels –Star Sports Highlights, Star Cricket Asia, ESPN, and ESPN HD. These four new channels can also telecast in regional languages.

Star Sports now has permission to uplink from Noida in Delhi NCR, with backup from Mumbai. Prior to this, the sports broadcaster was downlinking from Hong Kong and Singapore.

It may be recalled that Star Sports has parted ways with ESPN Software India in their joint venture in 2012. However, according to industry sources Star Sports continues to have the permission to use the ESPN brand name since the licence was applied before the Star Sports-ESPN joint venture had ended.
