After being ousted by the OpenAI board, chief executive Sam Altman will now join tech major Microsoft to lead the AI research team there. The development came to light when Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella himself announced the news on X.

"I’m super excited to have you join as CEO of this new group, Sam, setting a new pace for innovation. We’ve learned a lot over the years about how to give founders and innovators space to build independent identities and cultures within Microsoft, including GitHub, Mojang Studios, and LinkedIn, and I’m looking forward to having you do the same," wrote Nadella, addressing Altman.

Greg Brockman, who was also ousted from the board, was told that he would retain his role with OpenAI as his role was vital to the company. However, Brockman decided to step down and join Altman at Microsoft.

Altman was fired by OpenAI’s board on Friday last week through a hastily called Google Meet.

"As a part of this transition, Greg Brockman will be stepping down as chairman of the board and will remain in his role at the company, reporting to the CEO," said OpenAI in its blog.

Chief technology officer Mira Murati was appointed interim CEO to lead OpenAI after Altman. However, the company has hired Twitch co-founder Emmett Shear as Altman's successor.

"Mr. Altman’s departure follows a deliberative review process by the board, which concluded that he was not consistently candid in his communications with the board, hindering its ability to exercise its responsibilities. The board no longer has confidence in his ability to continue leading OpenAI," said the company.

Ilya Sutskever, chief scientist at OpenAI, tweeted: "I deeply regret my participation in the board's actions. I never intended to harm OpenAI. I love everything we've built together and I will do everything I can to reunite the company."
Altman and Brockman's departure was followed by mass exits.
