Civil Aviation Secretary Ashok Chawla was on Thursday, June 19, 2008, given additional charge as Secretary, Information & Broadcasting Ministry. He fills the slot left vacant following the transfer of former I&B Secretary Asha Swarup to Himachal Pradesh as Chief Secretary. Chawla is an IAS officer of the 1973 batch.

Civil Aviation Secretary Ashok Chawla has been given additional charge of Secretary of the Information & Broadcasting Ministry. He fills the slot left vacant following the transfer of former I&B Secretary Asha Swarup to Himachal Pradesh as Chief Secretary. Chawla took charge of the I&B Ministry as of today, June 19, 2008.

Chawla is an IAS officer of the 1973 batch. He is from the Gujarat cadre.

Prior to being appointed as Secretary, Civil Aviation, Chawla was Additional Secretary in the Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance, looking after the gamut of external economic relations, foreign investment, infrastructure financing, currency and coinage, etc. He was, in addition, the Chairman & Managing Director of the newly found Security Printing and Minting Corporation of India Ltd. He also was on the Board of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) as part-time Director.
