The Central Government has cracked its whip on channels showing content not appropriate for family viewing. As such, the Government has prohibited the transmission/re-transmission of satellite channel AXN throughout the country with immediate effect till March 15, 2007.

The programme in question here is ‘World’s Sexiest Advertisements’, which was aired on AXN. The Government stated that programmes such as ‘World’s Sexiest Advertisements’ were against good taste or decency and were likely to adversely affect public morality. “Therefore, the Central Government thinks it necessary to prohibit transmission or re-transmission of the said channel in the country. As such the Central Government in exercise of the power conferred by sub-section (2) of Section 20 of the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act, 1995, has taken decision to prohibit the transmission/re-transmission of this channel on all platforms,” the order stated.

Meanwhile, speaking to exchange4media Sundar Aaron, Country Head of AXN, said, “We are very shocked about this act of the Ministry of Broadcasting. We had taken the show ‘World’s Sexiest Advertisements’ off air in April 2006. We are a respectful channel and we always obey the laws of the country. We need to think about the next step. We will meet and discuss this issue with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.”
