Speaking on the second day of the IAA World Congress, being held at Washington, R Goplakrishnan, Executive Director, Tata Sons, said that India was next on the world scene. He was highlighting the emergence of India as a lucrative marketplace in the world economy and as an answer to the theme of IAA World Congress, ‘What’s coming next?’.
Gopalakrishnan projected India as a market of “bewildering plurality” and explained the unique characteristics of India through a framework that looked at India from a political, economic, social and psychological point of view.
He added, “India is a land of oxymorons and yet thrives despite that… or because of that.”
According to Gopalakrishnan, India was very much like the American and European markets as it was also a consumerism-led economy as consumers spent nearly 65 per cent of the GDP, which was in line with what happened in the US and Europe.
Gopalakrishnan also made a strong case for a marketer to understand the political and social economy of a country like India.
