I had met Ranjan Kapur on several occasions when I was heading Businessworld magazine, but I got to know him better in 2004, when he came in as our Angel Investor for our startup Mindworks Global Media Services - a journalism outsourcing firm for overseas newspapers and magazines.

I remember the day when he stepped into our tiny startup office in Safdarjung Enclave one fine morning and spent several hours discussing our plan, our vision, the market size and the opportunity that lay ahead us for such a venture. Ranjan was a firm believer of the outsourcing phenomenon and this opportunity was no different for him. He spent little time on the business plan we had prepared for him, rather looked at our executive summary and kept talking to us.
Ranjan appeared friendly, was willing to help us, get us connections in outside markets. He knew the bigger picture and was willing to risk it out with us. His next visit sealed the deal and I still remember him signing a HSBC Bank cheque for us as his contribution to become our angel investor. This was much needed by us helping us ramp up our operations.

Following years, our interactions increased and he used to spend much time mentoring us, guiding us through the several presentations, providing leads and connecting us with people he knew in the overseas markets. He wanted us to succeed and we did. The ramp up led to more investors and finally Helion Ventures came in buying out all the early investors and Ranjan exited with profits.

Ranjan's investment with us was quite by accident and not his well though-out plan, turning him into a serial investor subsequently - he invested thereafter in a Singapore-based mobile technology startup Tagit and later in several other businesses. It was his sharp mind backed by leadership qualities that set us on our success path. He had a big heart and in our case it was his heart backed by his wisdom and experience that led him to associate with us and move along with us. We as a team learnt much from him and his wisdom. Ranjan inspired us and was a true leader.

RIP Ranjan Kapur, you inspired many including us and with you ends an era of legends. It is a loss for the advertising industry and the would-be entrepreneurs! God bless his soul.
