The Mumbai Academy of Moving Image (MAMI) has announced the dates for the ninth international film festival in Mumbai this year. The festival will begin on March 8, 2007 with the opening Chinese film ‘Curse of the Golden Flower’ and end on March 15 with Mira Nair’s ‘Namesake’. The festival this year has been dedicated to the memory of the late Hrishikesh Mukherjee, veteran Indian filmmaker who was also the Founder Chairman of the academy.
STAR India and Adlabs are sponsoring the event, as over 100 films will be shown over the week. MP and Chairman of the MAMI Trust, Shyam Benegal said that the audience they are targeting would be niche.
Celebrities including Amitabh Bachchan, Javed Akhtar and Shri Pyarelal will be present at the inauguration, all of who will be presented awards for their contribution to Indian cinema and entertainment.
Benegal explained, “Our audience is not just everybody. The festival is for people who love cinema and appreciate great films. It is also for those who are in the Indian film industry today, and to whom, watching these movies can be of benefit. Finally, it is for the youth, to whom it can provide a whole new perspective.”
The festival will also host a competition between 12 different Indian films in different languages, as a five-member international jury headed by Girish Karnad will judge the best film. Delegate registration begins on February 26, 2007 from 1 pm to 7 pm.
