It’s celebration time at Starcom Worldwide. While the agency’s Mumbai office has bagged the media duties of Walt Disney Television International (WDTVI), the Delhi office has won the media duties of Eko India. The win comes on the heels of a multi-agency pitch.

Neither Starcom nor Eko officials were available for comments at the time of filing the story, however, sources close to the development informed that Eko would be one of more exciting clients for the agency, given the nature of the business.

Eko is building a low cost financial services infrastructure to increase the reach of financial institutions to the un-banked, and to democratise financial services in urban as well as rural areas. As the Eko website suggests, the “Eko system, we believe, is tuned to the needs of the target segment of providing secure, simple and convenient financial services in a cost-effective and scalable manner.” The keywords for the company are innovation and technology, and one look at Eko’s corporate information shows that the company would utilise technologies such as mobile phones to achieve this goals.

Starcom Mediavest Group’s capabilities such as Xpanse, which has been involved in grassroot marketing since its inception in February 2006, can be expected to play a key role in light of the overall objectives of the client.

Eko’s endeavour is to “build a rapidly scalable model by addressing the challenges of the existing models and by using mobile technology to help bring down significantly the network cost.”

State Bank of India has appointed Eko Aspire Foundation as its Business Correspondent and on February 23, 2009, Eko with State Bank of India launched the SBI Mini Savings Bank Account at Delhi’s Uttam Nagar area. SBI Mini Savings Bank account holders can do a host of financial transactions, including deposit and withdrawal from their accounts through their mobile phones at various SBI Eko Customer Service Points.

It may be recalled that Eko India had recently assigned its creative mandate to Saatchi & Saatchi.
