Punjabi singer Jasbir Singh Bains, known by his stage Jasbir Jassi has been appointed as a National Icon by the Election Commission of India. The role is similar to that of a national ambassador as the singer's music has been recognised as having great mass appeal which cuts across diverse age groups.
Through the appointment, the Elections Commission's aims to reach out to young, prospective voters and encourage them to maximise their participation in the forthcoming elections.
