Millions affected by Gmail phishing scam; Google responds with Safe Browsing updates
The sophisticated attack allows hackers to take over users' email accounts
Gmail users were hit by a sophisticated phishing attack early on Thursday. The attack is said to have affected not only individual users but also corporate accounts linked to Gmail. The attack comes in the form of an invitation to edit an innocuous-looking Google Doc, which further prompts the user to sign into their Google account.
It is not yet clear who is responsible for the attack or the actual extent to which users have been hit although media reports suggest that it was carried out on a massive scale and could have affected millions.
At the time of writing this report, Google Docs had issued a statement on Twitter claiming to have addressed the issue.
Phishing alludes to the sending of bogus emails purporting to be from a reputable source in order to induce individuals to reveal personal information, such as passwords, credit card details, and more.
