Okhla Times Editor shortlisted for UK award
Local news website Okhla Times Editor Asad has been shortlisted for the Xcity Award by London’s City University, and is the only person nominated who is not from the UK.
Local news website the Okhla Times has been nominated for an award by London’s City University. Asad, the Editor of the website, has been shortlisted for the Xcity Award, which is given by the University, and is the only person among the five shortlisted journalists who is not from the UK.
The Award will be announced on March 21, 2011, and the shortlist includes Simon Rogers, a pioneer in data journalism for The Guardian; Kate Day, Social Media and Engagement Editor for The Daily Telegraph; Tom Whitwell, Editorial Director, Times Digital; and James Ball of The Guardian.
The Okhla Times is a local news website focusing on just a locality of Delhi, not even the whole city, but within those constraints has created a site which is able to provide a detailed picture of the area. As a result, the site is able to create an active community which cares about the news covered in the site.
Asad, the Editor of the site, who is from Jamia Milia, said he was thrilled with the overwhelming response from the readers. He thanked the readers and said that their support of the website was what made the award happen. He said, “It appears the readers have endorsed the website by visiting it often.”
