Cricketer Virat Kohli has become the latest victim of deepfakes after a fake video of the actor has been seen doing rounds on the internet. In the video, Kohli is seen promoting a betting app, talking about making small investments on the app that lead to big returns.

Interestingly, the entire video is made to seem like television news segment from Aaj Tak where Kohli is being interviewed for his success on the betting app.

While deepfake bears uncanny resemblance to Kohli and his voice, on closer observation, the video shows some glitches and lags that are characteristic of AI videos.

Some time ago, Sara Tendulkar, daughter of cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar, also fell victim to the deepfake menace. The video depicted her talking "earning well" on gaming apps. The issue was addressed by Sachin Tendulkar himself.

Nora Fatehi also lent her voice to HDFC Bank's anti-deepfake campaign some time ago, to alert people against scammers and frauds.

Even Animal actor Rashmika Mandanna was targetted after her likeness was used in an AI video.

In November last year, the Centre issued an advisory to social media intermediaries to ensure that due diligence is exercised and reasonable efforts are made to identify misinformation and deepfakes, and in particular, information that violates the provisions of rules and regulations and/or user agreements.

As per the advisory, such cases are to be expeditiously actioned against, well within the timeframes stipulated under the IT Rules 2021. Any content that has misinformation or content about deep fakes is to be removed within 36 hours of reporting.
