Katju's letter of regret for anti-media remarks
Katju had written to the INS President, expressing his regret over his comments, where he had said “majority of media people are of poor intellectual level”
Markandey Katju, Chairman, Press Council of India, vide his letter dated September 21, 2012, addressed to President of the Indian Newspaper Society (INS), expressed his regret for his remarks that “majority of media people are of poor intellectual level”.
The Executive Committee of the INS, which met in New Delhi to consider the regret expressed by Katju, has decided to accept it.
It may be recalled that in October 2011, Katju had said in a television interview, “The general rut is very low and I have a poor opinion of most media people. The majority (of media persons), I am sorry to say, are of a very poor intellectual level. I doubt whether they have any idea of economic theory or political science, philosophy, literature, I have grave doubts whether they are well read in all this, which they should be.”
The Executive Committee of INS in its meeting held on November 17, 2011 had taken strong objection to the remarks made by Katju. In a strongly worded letter addressed to the Press Council of India Chairman, the INS President had urged him to withdraw his remarks.
