STAR Ananda, the 24-hour free-to-air Bengali news channel, felicitated eminent personalities from diverse fields for their achievements that made the Bengali community proud, nationally and internationally, at a special ceremony – Shera Bangali – recently in Kolkata.

The awards were presented in categories ranging from art, film, music, literature, to corporate, news, sports and lifetime achievement. The nominees were selected following an in-depth research made by the STAR Ananda editorial team.

The award winners for Shera Bangali 2009 include actor Rahul Bose (Films), cricketer Jhulan Goswami (Sports), music composer Shantanu Moitra (Music), painter Abir Karmakar (Arts), writer Ketaki Kushari Dyson (Literature), Sumit Banerjee (Corporate). Bengali actress Pauli Dam was adjudged the New Face of the Year. Renowned actor Soumitra Chatterjee was felicitated with the Lifetime Achievement Award for Shera Bangali 2009. Veteran film director Mrinal Sen handed over this prestigious award to Soumitra Chatterjee.

Former Indian Ambasador to the US, Ronen Sen, was awarded with the most prestigious Sherar Shera Bangali 2009 Award. This Award was given by Aveek Sarkar, Chairman, Media Content and Communications Services.

Speaking on the occasion, Ashok Venkatramani, CEO, MCCS, “We have dedicated ourselves to the recognition and felicitation of those personalities who have made Bengal proud and continue to do so. Shera Bangali is the truest effort in this direction to recognise those successful Bengalis, who not only have excelled in their respective fields, but have also helped in putting Bengalis in the global arena.”
