CNN's Chief Digital Officer Athan Stephanopoulos quits
A digital entrepreneur, Stephanopoulos joined CNN in October 2022
CNN's Chief Digital Officer, Athan Stephanopoulos, has stepped down from his role. The announcement came via a statement issued on Wednesday, where Stephanopoulos cited the introduction of a new vision for digital operations by CNN's recently appointed Chief, Mark Thompson.
Expressing his decision to resign, Stephanopoulos mentioned that he believes it's the opportune moment to allow Thompson the freedom to structure and shape the digital organization as he envisions. He conveyed his well wishes to CNN and the team for continued success in the path ahead.
This transition marks the second change in leadership within CNN's digital executive team since the management shift to Warner Bros. Discovery in August 2022, following its acquisition of WarnerMedia assets from AT&T.
The earlier shift, witnessed in June 2022, saw the departure of executives Alex MacCallum and Robyn Peterson, both instrumental in the launch of CNN's subscription video hub, CNN+.
A digital entrepreneur, Stephanopoulos joined CNN in October 2022, initially brought in under the leadership of Chris Licht, Thompson's predecessor. With Thompson expected to refocus CNN's digital and streaming businesses, this move signals a strategic shift to enhance the network's digital profile in response to changing viewer habits away from traditional cable TV.
