Ads for coaching institutes have long drawn flak for their tall and often false claims of success that often mislead students. There have been cases where multiple coaching classes use photographs of the same topper for their celebratory ads. In the recent case of Narayana Educational Institutions, the photograph of a student has been used twice to claim All India Rank of 1 and 11 within the same ad.

On June 10, a day after the results of the Indian Institute of Technology Joint Entrance Exam (IIT-JEE) were announced, Narayana Educational Institutions printed an advert of its top rankers sprawled across the front pages of many national dailies. The only problem - the same person was shown to be ranked 1 and 11. This “mistake” was soon caught by several social media users who began calling out the scam behind such claims.

In fact, one X user even went on to show how the same ad has two inconsistencies. The other being the sixth ranker being claimed as the student of a competing coaching institute as well.

A reddit user on the r/JEENEETards even noticed that the editor seems to have pasted different faces to the same body in exactly the same position. It was due to the exaggerated claims in such ads that the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) had come up with guidelines to curb misleading advertising by coaching institutions in February this year, bringing them under the purview of the Consumer Protection Act 2019.

According to these guidelines, these organizations were prohibited from making false claims about the success rate of their students, ranks of students or selection numbers. Haryana government not only passed a bill to this effect but also laid down fines of upto Rs 1 lakh for violators. The first institute was penalised under the new CCPA guidelines last week when CCPA fined an IAS coaching centre Rs 3 lakhs for a 2022 print ad claiming to provide “guaranteed success” to its students.

Another educational ad went viral recently when a huge print advert leveraged anti-NEET sentiments, urging students to prepare for CLAT instead.
