The central government has identified nearly 100 accounts as those spreading misinformation about the situation in Kashmir, media reports said. It had also asked Twitter to take down eight handles.

The decision to suspend handles was taken up by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.

Many of these handles in question were being operated from outside the Valley, officials were reported as saying.

The government has said these social media accounts were spreading rumours to disturb the peace in Kashmir.
