Noted Kannada journalist Gauri Lankesh shot dead
The activist-journalist was shot dead at her residence in Bengaluru on Tuesday
Well-known Kannada journalist, Gauri Lankesh was shot dead at her residence in Rajarajeshwari Nagar, Bengaluru on Tuesday evening. According to reports, three bullets hit her – two on chest, one on the forehead. Bengaluru Police Commissioner T Suneel Kumar told agencies that out of seven bullets fired at her, three took her life.
Gauri Lankesh was the eldest daughter of well-known Kannada poet-turned-journalist P Lankesh. She was the editor of Lankesh Patrike, a famous Kannada tabloid which was founded in 1980 by her father.
This popular vernacular tabloid was published weekly with an aim to be a platform for the oppressed, Dalits, women and marginalized sections of society and was on the lines of Mahatma Gandhi’s Harijan.
After P Lankesh’s death, Gauri’s brother Indrajit Lankesh took over as its Managing Editor. Recently, she had started with her own publication ‘Gauri Lankesh Patrike’ which was a weekly on the lines of Lankesh Patrike.
A progressive thinker and writer, the activist and journalist was known for her outspokenness and was constantly under threat from those who had ideological differences with her. Press Club of India, Indian Women Press Corps and Press Association in New Delhi will jointly organise a protest meeting on Wednesday at 3pm in the memory of Gauri Lankesh in order to seek justice for her.
