Gauri Lankesh was the eldest daughter of well-known Kannada poet-turned-journalist P Lankesh. She was the editor of Lankesh Patrike, a famous Kannada tabloid which was founded in 1980 by her father.
This popular vernacular tabloid was published weekly with an aim to be a platform for the oppressed, Dalits, women and marginalized sections of society and was on the lines of Mahatma Gandhi’s Harijan.
After P Lankesh’s death, Gauri’s brother Indrajit Lankesh took over as its Managing Editor. Recently, she had started with her own publication ‘Gauri Lankesh Patrike’ which was a weekly on the lines of Lankesh Patrike.
A progressive thinker and writer, the activist and journalist was known for her outspokenness and was constantly under threat from those who had ideological differences with her.
