Press Council of India takes suo motu cognizance on alleged attack on Arnab Goswami

The council has also released a statement, asking the Government of Maharashtra to submit a report on the facts of the attack at the earliest

After Republic editor Arnab Goswami and his wife were allegedly assaulted by goons on midnight of April 23, the Press Council of India (PCI) has taken suo motu cognizance of the alleged attack. The council has also released a statement, asking the Government of Maharashtra to submit a report on the facts of the case at the earliest.

PCI said that the council is distressed by the news of the attack on Goswami, purportedly for his views. “Every citizen in the Country including a journalist has the right to express their opinion which may not be palatable to many but this does not give any body the authority to strangulate such voice,” it stated.

Adding that violence is not the answer even to “bad journalism,” PCI said that it expects the government to apprehend the perpetrators and bring them to justice.

“While taking suo motu cognizance in the matter, Hon’ble Chairman has directed the Government of Maharashtra, through the Chief Secretary and Commissioner of Police, Mumbai to submit a report on the facts of the case at the earliest,” said the statement.
