The Delhi High Court has issued notice on a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by Senior Journalist Rajat Sharma. The PIL highlights the lack of regulation of deepfake technology in the country and its potential threats to various aspects of society.

As per reports, a division bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Manmeet Pritam Singh Arora sought a response from the Union Government, specifically the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, during the hearing. The bench expressed concerns over the proliferation of deepfake technology, emphasizing its impact on public discourse, democratic processes, and individual privacy.

The PIL, filed by Rajat Sharma, Chairman and Editor-in-Chief of INDIA TV, underscores the significant risks posed by deepfake technology. It cites potential threats such as misinformation campaigns, identity theft, and harm to individuals' reputations and privacy.

Of particular concern is the potential misuse of deepfake technology to create fabricated content involving influential public figures, including politicians, sportsmen, and actors. The plea emphasizes the urgent need for strict enforcement and proactive measures to mitigate these risks and safeguard fundamental rights guaranteed under the Constitution of India.

The PIL serves as a crucial call to action, urging the authorities to address the challenges posed by deepfake technology and implement measures to protect individuals and uphold democratic values in the digital age.
