MIB aims to strengthen broadcasting system by reviewing policies: Prakash Javadekar

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has said that it does not intend to levy a 10% licence fee on broadcasters and cable operators, according to reports.

Speaking in the Lok Sabha, Information and Broadcasting Minister, Prakash Javadekar also informed that the Ministry continuously strives to create an enabling environment for strengthening of the broadcasting system through continuous review of policies and programmes and taking relevant measures to improve ease of doing business.

According to reports, Javadekar said, “There is no proposal to levy 10 per cent licence fee across the board on broadcasters and cable operators,”

The Minister also stated that industry-wise information relating to licence fee is not centrally maintained.

As of 31st January 2020, there are 1630 Multi-System Operators (MSOs) registered with MIB. However, Local Cable Operators (LCOs) are not currently registered with the Ministry. There are five DTH operators in the country including Dish TV, Tata Sky, Bharti Telemedia, Sun Direct TV, and Independent TV.
