SC stays restraining order on Karnataka news channel
The Karnataka high court had issued restraining orders against Power TV upon allegations that the news channel was airing defamatory content
The Supreme Court has stayed an order passed by the Karnataka high court restraining broadcasting of Kannada news channel Power TV.
Media reports have quoted Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud as saying that the "state is duty bound to protect freedom of speech and expression".
The restraining order against M/s Power Smart Media Private Limited was passed after the channel was found to have violated the Cable TV Networks Regulation Act.
The channel was also accused of airing defamatory news content in the sexual assault case against Prajwal Revanna and his brother Suraj Revanna.
