Sun Network, the second largest Indian television network, in the country plans to enter the direct-to-home (DTH) on its own, and has sought government permission to start operations.

Kalanithi Maran, chairman and managing director, Sun Network told Business Standard, “We have filed an application with the information and broadcasting ministry. We think that we can manage alone without a partner.”

When asked about the investment on the DTH venture, Maran said that it involved large investments but declined to give more information.

If the government gives the license in the next three months, we expect to start the DTH venture by the end of the year, he added.

Unlike other television ventures, the gestation period for this venture is a long time before one could see profits, he added.
