  • Ted Turner, the founder of CNN, transformed news consumption from a scheduled format to a continuous 24/7 cycle, fostering an immediate need for information.
  • Known for his bold personality and adventurous lifestyle, Turner was often referred to as 'Captain Outrageous' and 'The Mouth of the South.'
  • He was a pioneer in media, creating demand for news in a way that had not previously existed, rather than just servicing existing demand.
  • Ted Turner passed away on May 6 at the age of 87, surrounded by family, after battling Lewy body dementia in his later years.

Ted Turner was the one who said let no one wait for the news and let the news wait for no one.

Ted Turner rewired how the world understood news and time.

Before CNN, news had a schedule. One waited for it.

After CNN, the news went from episodic to continuous and created a new human reflex.

The need to know.

Right now.

All the Time.

Anytime.

He was called ‘Captain Outrageous’ and ‘The Mouth of the South’.

These are labels that polite business culture uses to contain people it can’t categorize.

He raced yachts.

He lived the life of the American West.

He bragged, openly that “If only I had a little humility, I’d be perfect.”

Behind the bravado was the willingness to build what didn’t exist yet.

He  bet everything on an audience that hadn’t discovered it needed what he was making.

Ted Turner was a category creator.

So many corporate giants just service the demand . He created demand.

On Wednesday 6th May Ted Turner died at age 87, surrounded by family.

Lewy body dementia had slowed him in later years.

The 24/7 news cycle he unleashed has not slowed at all.

Rest in peace , Captain.
