On May 13th, a large 120ft by 120ft billboard situated in Ghatkopar in the central suburbs of Mumbai collapsed during an unexpected storm, killing 16 and injuring 75 people. According to news reports, the structure erected by Ego Media was audited and deemed safe by a private agency last year.
The incident led to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation overhauling its guidelines for billboards and out-of-home agencies. It also sparked a nationwide debate on the risks of illegal hoardings that have mushroomed nationwide. BMC's draft OOH policy has called for a ban on rooftop hoarding displays, ads on glass facades and gantry hoardings. The new policy also aims stricter curbs on obscene or offensive DOOH.
