70-year-old Shah succeeds Richard Sharp who had to step down after his email exchanges with former UK PM Boris Johnson came under the scanner. Sharp had to resign after an official inquiry showed that he failed to disclose his role in helping Johnson acquire an £800,000 loan.
Shah was born in Aurangabad in 1952, moving to UK in 1960. He is the CEO of the media company Juniper TV.
He has been associated with broadcasting since 1979 with his stint at London Weekend Television.
In 1987, he was appointed as the head of BBC’s head of television current affairs. Shah headed BBC’s political journalism programmes from 1994 to 1998.
He bought Juniper TV in 1998 and was named one of the three non-executive directors of BBC in 2007.
