Regulation of over-the-top (OTT) platforms comes under the purview of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, reportedly said Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia.

This is amid the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) examining requests by telecom operators, urging the ministry to push OTT platforms to share their infrastructure costs with them, adding that telecom infrastructure expansion has not been in line with the growth of data consumption.

The platforms have pushed back against the imposition, stating that such regulatory compliances meant for the telecom sector would prevent innovations in OTT, forcing them to charge consumers for erstwhile free services.
