Ranjan Kapur: The unforgettable goodwill ambassador of the ad world.
Disbelief that the man who hosted one of the biggest private industry parties 10 days ago is gone.
With the sudden demise of veteran advertising professional and doyen of the Indian ad word, Ranjan Kapur has passed away in Mumbai recently. The entire advertising fraternity is in a state of shock. No one seems to believe that the man who hosted one of the biggest private industry bashes just ten days ago is no more.
But then, life can be cruel. At 75, bubbling with zest for life and known as someone who was a keeper of relationships and was extremely helpful and polite, the absence of Kapur has left everyone baffled.
Born in Lahore, Kapur completed his Master’s degree in English from St. Stephens College, Delhi University and a degree in Advanced Advertising Studies from the Advertising Agencies Association of America. Kapur, who started his career with Citibank, spent nearly four decades with advertising agency Ogilvy & Mather in various positions across markets in India, East Asia and the US and eventually he was appointed Executive Chairman of O&M India. He moved to India from the Singapore office and turned the India operations around, building Ogilvy into a prominent agency in the country. Kapur was Country Manager of WPP India since 2004 and was recently replaced by CVL Srinivas. He also served on the board of several companies.
For his immense contribution to the Indian advertising industry, Kapur was honoured with the Industry’s Lifetime Achievement Award from AAAI (Advertising Agencies Association of India) in 2008. Kapur is survived by his wife Jimi Kapur and daughter Tina Kapur.
