With the country ringing in the festive season, the municipal body in South Delhi is all set to add to the celebrations with LED unipoles. Starting September 9, the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) will introduce LED unipoles.

“Taking a step towards digital India, SDMC is experimenting with LED on unipoles for the first time. It is one of the most expensive tenders at Rs 52 lakh per month. Some of these unipoles are already installed on Nelson Mandela Road,” shared Prem Shankar Jha, Deputy Commissioner, SDMC.

“We have also allowed a bigger size for these unipoles. Earlier, the size used to be around 18sqm. This time we have allotted 36 sqm, which is the biggest unipole size so far for SDMC. The maximum size that we have allowed in the past is 30 sqm on NH 8. We had allowed LED inside the market areas earlier. But this is the first time we thought of trying it on unipoles. We hope to get good responses,” added Jha.

Meanwhile, the civic body is also setting an example for other municipal bodies with its other initiatives. SDMC recently built a ‘Waste to Wonders’ park made of metal scrap. The theme park, which has been has used 150 tonnes of industrial and other waste, has replicas of the seven wonders of the world, including the Eiffel Tower (60-ft) and the Taj Mahal (20-ft). The civic body spent around Rs 7.5 crore on the park that has turned out to be a hit among Delhiites and tourists ever since it opened in February this year.

“We have allotted this space for maintenance to a company called Happenings. They will collaborate with brands to open food joints, and for the advertising too. We will install hoardings inside the park,” said Jha. He added “We are also considering if the space could be lent out for film shoots or pre-wedding shoots, which would also generate revenue.”

When asked about the target for FY19-20, Jha said they are targeting Rs 175 crore, and assured that SDMC would yet again go past the target just like the previous ones.
