Stage is set for Ogilvy India’s ‘Envies’ in Mumbai on December 16, 2013. The awards will recognise the work that makes other people hold their heads in frustration and say ‘I wish I had done it’.
Unlike the True Show held by Lowe, Ogilvy had an external jury for the Envies, which included Agnello Dias (Taproot), Raj Kamble (StrawberryFrog), Sajan Raj Kurup (Creativeland Asia), Ashish Chakravarty (Contract), Arun Iyer (Lowe), Akshay Kapnadak (McCann Erickson), Malvika Mehra (Grey), Josy Paul (BBDO), Sonal Dabral (DDB Mudra), and V Sunil (Wieden+Kennedy).
“The experience was warm, friendly and enjoyable. And the work was very Ogilvy. Amongst all, there were a few pieces that I wish I had done,” remarked Sajan Raj Kurup, Founder & Creative Chairman, Creativeland Asia on judging the Envies, who believes encouragement in any form is beautiful.
This being the first year of the Envies, work for the last two years is being reviewed and 35 Envies will be given out to showcase Ogilvy India’s work.
“It felt good to go back to my alma mater. It’s the school that taught me advertising when I started off as a trainee. I like the name ‘Envies’. It tells you instantly that this is the work that people envy – internally and externally. The work that the jury chose lives up to the name. You can’t categorise Envies into gold, silver and bronze, because it is about envy. It’s all green!” said BBDO India’s Josy Paul on the awards and the format.
Arun Iyer, National Creative Director, Lowe Lintas & Partners added here, “The concept of the awards is simple, there was good work across brands and it was a pleasant jury, everyone had their own preference. We are in a day and age where the medium is irrelevant.”
Raising the bar with a Grand Prix
“The Envies experience has been different from a typical jury. To begin with, the atmosphere is less formal, and we weren’t being monitored by the auditors. The discussion and debates, however, were as thorough and like any other jury. And as is the case with most juries, a lot of the work on display was very impressive. All award shows have their own point of views on handing out awards – whether they want to give awards in different product and service categories, or across categories like The One Show. We also picked a ‘Grand Prix’,” shared Akshay Kapnadak, ECD, McCann Erickson.
