The ministry of electronics and IT (MeitY) is likely to form a fact-checking team that will verify all information related to the government has been put up on social media and internet intermediaries, media networks have reported.

The team will have three members - two from the IT ministry and a third member who will be a legal expert.

This body will coordinate with other departments to verify the reported facts.

Earlier, the Editors Guild of India had expressed concerns over a draft amendment made to the Information Technology Rules, 2021, by the Ministry of Electronics and IT (MEITY) giving authority to the Press Information Bureau (PIB) to determine the veracity of news reports, and anything termed ‘fake’.

Any such content was to be taken down by online intermediaries, including social media platforms, the government had said.
