By involving the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, the Centre wants to identify violators with appropriate legal action and penalties
In a short affidavit, MEITY said that the social media platform has acknowledged that the personnel are appointed as the company's employees and not as 'contingent workers'
The affidavit states that IT Rules 2021 have been created to ensure a level-playing field between online & offline media and are the same as the norms for traditional news publishers (Print and TV)
In a notice, MeitY had said that Twitter's refusal to comply with the rules demonstrated its 'lack of commitment & efforts towards providing a safe experience to the people on its platform'
The microblogging site agreed to comply with the IT rules but raised concerns about free speech. MeitY accused the platform of 'dictating terms to the world's largest democracy'
In a separate notification, the government also said that a social media platform with more than 5 million registered users in India will be considered a 'Significant Social Media Intermediary'
The ministry added that in the provision, the Secretary, MeitY has been replaced by Secretary, I&B since OTT and digital media will be now under MIB ambit
