#GujaratElections picks up on Twitter with over 1.9 million mentions

Twitter as a social messaging tool presents great opportunities for political candidates to create branding, exposure and word-of-mouth advertising. Similarly, its popularity among the masses is almost unquestionable. They make it a point to tweet their mind on who they believe should win and it also becomes a great metric of measuring a candidate’s popularity. The Gujarat Elections were no different with over 1.9 million mentions of the #GujaratElections2017 on Twitter since December 1, 2017.
PM Modi emerged as the most mentioned personality while Vijay Rupani as the most mentioned candidate on Twitter. The most talked about topics were development, religion, Hindutva and GST. This was also the first time that Twitter introduced live streaming of the elections in India, adding more ways for people to watch the #GujaratElection unfold in real-time. A lot of jokes and memes, as always, also erupted after the results were out which brought out the lighter side of the Gujarat Elections.
Despite the fact that the Elections occurred in one State of India, i.e. Gujarat, discussions on Twitter on December 18, the final results day, were vibrant all over the country and even worldwide. People all over the world leveraged Twitter to see what’s happening in India as the nation develops as a cultural, economic and political force to be reckoned with. The most mentioned hashtag was #GujaratElection2017. Among the top 10 Retweeted Tweets, five of them were Hindi Tweets, suggesting rising interest in local language conversations on Twitter.
